Teaching Philosophy

My teaching philosophy centers on two simple ideas: meet students where they are and help them build confidence through success.

Every student starts at a different place. If a student struggles with literary analysis, we might begin by analyzing song lyrics. If essays feel overwhelming, we might start with a single paragraph and build from there. Breaking complex skills into manageable steps helps students experience success early and often.

I also believe strong learning begins with strong relationships. Before we dive into essay writing, reading comprehension, or literary analysis, I want to understand the student. What are their interests? What are their strengths? What challenges are they facing?

I use those interests to make learning more engaging and meaningful. Over the years, I've learned about Minecraft, Roblox, Percy Jackson, K-pop, Dungeons & Dragons, and countless other topics because they mattered to my students. When students connect learning to something they enjoy, they're often more willing to read, write, think critically, and take academic risks.

My goal is not simply to help students complete assignments. It's to help middle and high school students become more confident readers, stronger writers, and more independent learners.
